Are chemical home peels really effective? What are the benefits? ~@styledo via Twitter

Peel Away The Years!

Did you know that an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) facial peel can help you get a fresher, more luminous complexion? Skin is the body's largest organ and turns over new growth every single day. As old skin cells shed, new cells grow, and when the old cells do not slough off, your skin can look dull and lifeless. This is the perfect time to add an AHA peel to your weekly beauty routine. Peels enhance exfoliation to help refine skin texture, smooth fine lines and even skin discoloration, while helping to reduce the appearance of acne scars and environmental damage.

An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peel, like the Exuviance Performance Peel AP25, is a safe and easy to use system that can be performed at home. This simple, two-step process utilizes a cocktail of Glycolic, Mandelic and Polyhydroxy Acids to help exfoliate dead surface layers and stimulate the process of cell renewal. After the peel has been applied and activated, wait a few minutes, then follow with a quick swipe of the neutralizer pad and you're done.

The results? A healthier looking, more radiant complexion. Clinical studies indicate that use of the Exuviance Performance Peel AP25 for one month, twice a week, provides powerful benefits: 100% of users saw improvement in fine lines and wrinkles and 94% of users saw more even skin tone, texture and radiance. Are you looking for something stronger than a home peel? A variety of skin rejuvenation peels can be customized by your Esthetician or physician based on your unique skin type and the specific results you hope to achieve. A quick conversation with your Esthetician can help you determine the correct peel for your complexion.

I have little white bumps on the backs of my upper arms, what are they and what can I do about them? ~Lisa, Princeton, NJ

Those Little White Bumps...

This very common skin condition is known as Keratosis Pilaris (KP) and affects about 50% of all adults. Don't worry—while KP may look undesirable and feel rough to the touch, this condition is not harmful in anyway. The white bumps are caused when excess keratin protein gets trapped in the hair follicles due to insufficient exfoliation. KP is most often found on the backs of arms and the upper thighs, but can appear on other parts of the body as well. While those affected can experience this condition year round, Keratosis Pilaris is usually worse in the winter due to the cold, dry air.

There are some easy ways to keep it under control and less noticeable. The use of mechanical exfoliants such as products with scrubbing beads or grains can irritate the condition, making it more visibly noticeable. Instead, we recommend using a daily moisturizer with high strength Alpha Hydroxy Acid such as NeoStrata Lotion Plus AHA 15. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are proven to increase the exfoliation process, which will smooth the skin and lessen the appearance of those little white bumps without the added irritation that comes from scrubbing.

Can I reduce my pore size? ~Amy B., Allentown

Refining Pores

With age and sun exposure, the skin loses its elasticity and pore size can increase. Genetics play a role too. If you aren't one of the lucky few born with microscopic pores, there are products that can help make your pores appear smaller, and we think it's important to know what you can do to keep your pores from getting any larger.

You may notice that pores contain hair follicles and sweat glands that can easily become clogged and enlarged. Over time, your pores may appear larger due to environmental and sun damage, a buildup of bacteria, oil and dead skin cells and improper skin care including lack of exfoliation.

Maintaining a good skin care regimen is vital to keeping your pores clean and healthy looking. Opt for skin care products with ingredients known to increase cell turnover and enhance the exfoliation process. Keeping your pores clean and clear, combined with the use of certain topical treatments can also make them appear smaller. Products with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) are proven to stimulate cell turnover which not only helps prevent pores from clogging and stretching, they also make pores appear more refined.

To refine and unclog your pores, we recommend that you cleanse your face twice daily with a pore-refining cleanser such as NeoStrata Antibacterial Facial Cleanser or NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash to start the exfoliation process. For more oily skin types we suggest following with an oil-reducing toner such as NeoStrata Oily Skin Solution with 8% glycolic acid. Finish your routine with an oil-controlling moisturizer, such as NeoStrata Sheer Hydration SPF 35 to add necessary moisture while keeping excess oil production under control. For further pore refinement supplement your daily regimen with a weekly peel, such as Exuviance Performance Peel AP25.
