I've started to see dark spots on my face and chest, what can I do? ~Nicole, via email

Distressing Discolorations

After years of sun damage (and too many days having forgotten your SPF), dark spots and marks you see emerging now can be aging your appearance by a decade or more! Thankfully, there's a new spot corrector: Exuviance OptiLight Tone Corrector. This hydroquinone-free formula diminishes the look of existing dark spots while preventing new discolorations from forming, restoring allover brightness and evening skin tone.

"Excess sun exposure over the years can leave your skin with a variety of unwanted sun spots, dark marks, and discolorations on your face, hands and décolletage. When considering skin care that addresses these hyperpigmentation concerns, choose correction products that diminish existing discolorations and help prevent new spots from developing. Exuviance OptiLight Tone Corrector utilizes NeoGlucosamine™, Retinol and a stable form of Vitamin C to reduce the intensity of existing dark spots by promoting cell turnover to lightly exfoliate and break up pigment clusters. Proven botanical ingredients such as Turmeric and Alpine Plants help block the enzyme that triggers new melanin production, preventing new spots from forming." ~Dr. Julie K. Karen, a board certified dermatologist who specializes in dermatologic and laser surgery, cosmetic dermatology, and Mohs micrographic surgery and currently practices at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York.

How does it work? The secret is in patented NeoGlucosamine™. "NeoGlucosamine™ is a non-acid exfoliant that helps to stimulate cell renewal without irritating the skin and also can help reduce pigment abnormalities. As a building block of hyaluronic acid, it helps to fortify the skin's support matrix." ~says Dr. Karen.

Hydroquinone is a skin lightening ingredient approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It lightens skin by helping to reduce the production of melanin / pigment, though some people prefer to use products without HQ in them. "Exuviance OptiLight Tone Corrector," adds Dr. Karen, "is especially recommended for patients who cannot tolerate hydroquinone, as well as for those who wish to avoid harsh, prescription bleaching agents."

What can I do about my shiny complexion? ~Kristin C., via email

Shine Control

Shine on the skin occurs when there is an overproduction of sebum, a substance produced by our oil glands. We usually experience shiny, oily skin in our forehead region, along the nose, and along the chin, where the oil glands in these areas are bigger and more active. When our oil glands produce the right amount of oil, they function effectively to moisturize and protect the skin from the environment. In excess amounts, sebum can cause skin care problems and unwanted shine.

Our genetic make-up determines how much oil our skin will produce and as a result, some individuals naturally produce more oil than others. However, there are products available that can help control a shiny complexion. Exuviance Matte Perfection is a light, oil-free lotion that quickly absorbs excess oil and minimizes the appearance of pores, transforming oily skin into a smooth matte complexion. The key ingredient is Mandelic Acid, an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), which helps minimize shine while smoothing the skin. Exuviance Matte Perfection glides easily over or under moisturizer, can be worn under makeup as a primer, or over makeup to impart a fresh, shine-free finish.

At night, you can help normalize your skin with Exuviance Night Renewal HydraGel. This lightweight gel contains Phytotal®, a blend of oil-reducing ingredients that help decrease excess oiliness and shine while helping to retain the natural moisture in your skin. Beneficial Mandelic Acid offers help controlling oil production to reduce shine, and give you a smoother, healthier looking complexion while you sleep.

What is Vitiligo? ~MaryBeth W., via email

Concealing Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin condition in which there is depigmentation, or a loss of color from areas of the skin. White patches of skin begin to form when melanocytes (cells that make pigment) die or are unable to function to produce and form melanin. These patches can appear suddenly or gradually, most often on the face, elbows and knees, and hands and feet. The cause of Vitiligo is unknown and it can affect people of any age or race.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Vitiligo and no known way to prevent it, but there are concealers and foundations from Exuviance that help cover these discolorations and provide a more even toned complexion. CoverBlend Concealing Treatment Makeup SPF 20 helps conceal vitiligo (as well as other pigmentation concerns such as blemishes, dark under eye circle, scars, redness and dark spots). By choosing a shade that closely matches your skin, you can apply this medical makeup over the lighter pigmented areas and blend in with the rest of your complexion.

Starting with a small amount, simply use your fingertips or a sponge to apply the makeup, taking care to smooth and blend it into your skin. If an area needs more camouflaging, apply a bit more makeup in a dabbing motion to build to the desired coverage.

BONUS POINTS: CoverBlend Concealing Treatment Makeup SPF 20 contains Polyhydroxy Acid Gluconolactone to help improve skin tone and diminish signs of aging while offering complete coverage.
